Say hello to my little friend, the Old Fashioned!
After watching Mad Men it left me thirsty and craving for whisky, which I have never in my life liked at all. But when Don and Roger spent their days in the office always with a drink in their hand, it just looked so darn good. Also, I envied them for getting to drink at work.
I did try Ardbeg once.
And it left me in a pile on the floor, crying (not really, but I wanted to). That is some hard core whisky! Single malt and with a very strong taste, not to mention the alcohol level! Haha. Since then I was scarred and thought «Never again!»
After watching Don Draper order an Old Fashioned for the 100th time, I started to wonder what that tastes like. Because thats not «real» whisky when its mixed with other stuff. And living where I live, I had to hunt down one of the ingredients. I searched every liquor store I went in, but nooo. The bitter had to be ordered in advance for me to have it. But one day, when I wasn’t even looking, they had it! Angostura Bitter, my precious.
Since I already had been into hard training in liking whisky by itself (I actually enjoy it VERY MUCH now), or even better, with a cigar ❤ I couldn’t wait to get home and make myself an Old Fashioned. Finally!
And you know what, I LOVE IT! Its the best thing I ever had.
The best part is that its not that kind of drink you just pour down like there is no tomorrow, its the kind you just enjoy and sip on. Yas.
How to make Old Fashioned:
4.5 cL Bourbon or Rye whiskey
2 dashes Angostura bitters
1 sugar cube
Few dashes plain water
Place sugar cube in old fashioned glass and saturate with bitters, add a dash of plain water.
Muddle until dissolved.
Fill the glass with ice cubes and add whiskey.
Garnish with orange slice, and a cocktail cherry.
I made it on Black Velvet blended whisky, never tried bourbon or rye so I don’t know how much of a difference it makes. I will definitely try Old Fashioned in other varieties when I get the money for it, haha.
So from now on if you catch me in a bar, you know what I’ll be drinking! NOT water, thats for sure.
